The nickname of BayBears pays homage to the history of baseball in Mobile. The Mobile Bears were named such in 1918 and have played many seasons with breaks in between in the old Southern Association until 1961. After a 27 year hiatus, baseball returned to Mobile.

The BayBears have been apart of Mobile summers for 22 years. Game 1 was played at the "Hank" on April 17th, 1997 and as the AA affiliate of the San Diego Padres. 1998 saw the BayBears win their first Southern League Championship. The BayBears would win 3 other titles: Co-Champs in 2004 and Back-to-Back in 2011 and 2012. Mobile has been the AA farm club for the Arizona Diamondback (2006-2016) and currently the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (2017-now).

A number of future major leaguers have played on the field at Hank Aaron Stadium. Over 150 players have played with or against the BayBears have been promoted to the Major Leagues. Local pitcher Jake Peavy played for the team in 2001 and part of 2002 before being called up to the Show and is now a part of the BayBears Hall of Fame. Additional stars include current Major Leaguers: Paul Goldschmidt, Max Scherzer, Carlos Gonzalez, Justin Upton, AJ Pollock and Trevor Bauer to name a few.

While at Hank Aaron Stadium, make sure to check out the Swinging Bear Gift Shop. Pick up gear for the entire family to show your support for the BayBears. Everything from apparel to novelties like a Bay B. Bear Foam Head, mini bats, and baseballs.
